Providing Advice in GP practices saves money and changes lives

In 2023 South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (NHS) funded Citizens Advice Sheffield to provide advice to patients through their GP practices across parts of the city that experience the highest levels of deprivation. Since then we’ve supported 1,649 clients to tackle over 8,500 advice issues. The most common issues related to benefits and with our help patients have been able to claim more than £4.36 million in benefits to which they were entitled.

One client said she “Would like to thank you for all the support that has literally changed her life . Opened her eyes to the help that is out there for patients like herself. The positive outcome of the [advice] has allowed her to work on her own terms ,manage her finances and reduce stress levels to such a point that she no longer needs mental health intervention.”

And it’s not just the patients who benefit “Having an advisor in-house means our patients get help quickly, and we can concentrate on their medical care.” (Sheffield Health Care Professional)

An independent external evaluation of the CA Sheffield service found that:

  • Staff reported a 40% decrease in time spent handling non-medical patient issues.
  • 75% of GPs and staff expressed that the CAS service allowed them to focus on clinical responsibilities.
