  • Does Universal Credit Help Work Progression?  Citizens Advice Sheffield have published a report arising from interviews with clients who are on Universal Credit and working part time in Sheffield.  The report is based on interviews with an anonymised sample of Citizens Advice Sheffield’s client to see if the Universal Credit system is helping them with work progression to increase their income. Is the new benefit system providing the promised support to help them progress in work and, if not, what could be done to improve the situation? This work has been undertaken by the Research and Campaigns team – Frances Potter, Tim Arnold, Kate McGimpsey and, in particular, by our postgraduate student, Ellie Jones who interviewed the clients and analysed the data.  You can read the report in full here.

  • Just about managing – November 2018: Citizens Advice Sheffield have published a report arising from interviews with clients who are ‘Just About Managing’ and working part time in Sheffield.  The report is based on interviews with an anonymised sample of Citizens Advice Sheffield’s clients who had been finding it difficult to cover everyday household expenses from their current pay. What prevented them from increasing their income by working more hours or finding better-paid jobs? We found that this apparently obvious solution is not open to everyone.   This work has been undertaken by the Research and Campaigns team – Frances Potter, Tim Arnold, Kate McGimpsey and, in particular, by our postgraduate student, Jenny Reed, who interviewed the clients and analysed the data.
  • Universal Credit briefings on roll out in Sheffield: We are working with Sheffield City Council and other partners to prepare for the roll out of Universal Credit in Sheffield from November 2018 onwards.  We have issued two briefings, providing detailed background information about Universal Credit and about the steps we are taking to prepare for its roll out.
  • Universal Credit submission: our submission into the Work and Pensions Select Committee’s inquiry was prepared by our research and campaigns team led by Frances Potter and Tim Arnold.  We have been campaigning nationally for a pause to the roll out of Universal Credit so that the serious problems it is causing to many poor and vulnerable people and families can be resolved.  The Government’s decision to press ahead is, we believe, ill-judged and most disappointing.  We will continue to press for change, and our submission is our latest contribution to this. – October 2017
